Editorial policy
1. Copyright & License
Copyright to all published materials is owned by the Korean Society of Animal Science and Technology. Every author should sign and submit the copyright transfer agreement forms. Copyright information is indicated on all published papers (HTML and PDF) and on the website.
JAST is an open access journal. Articles are distributed under the terms of the Creative Commons Attribution Non-Commercial License (http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-nc/4.0), which permits unrestricted use, distribution, and reproduction in any medium, provided the original work is properly cited. Permission is not required to reuse tables or figures published in this journal in other periodicals, books, or media for non-commercial purposes, provided that the original work is properly cited. For any commercial use of material from this journal, permission must be obtained from the copyright holder. All contents of the journal are available immediately upon publication without embargo period.
2. Peer review policy
JAST has an online submission and peer review system at https://submission.ejast.org.
JAST reviews all manuscripts received. A manuscript is first reviewed for its format and adherence to the aims and scope of the journal. If the manuscript meets these two criteria, it is dispatched to two or more investigators in the field with relevant knowledge.
JAST operates a single-blind peer review system, where the reviews are aware of the names and affiliations of the authors, but the reviewer reports provided to authors are anonymous. The benefit of single-blind peer review is that it is the traditional model of peer review that many reviewers are comfortable with, and it facilitates a dispassionate critique of a manuscript.
Assuming the manuscript is sent to reviewers, JAST waits to receive opinions from at least two reviewers. In addition, if deemed necessary, a review of statistics may be requested. The acceptance criteria for all papers are based on the quality and originality of the research and its scientific significance. Acceptance of the manuscript is decided based on the critiques and recommended decision of the reviewers.
An initial decision will normally be made within 4 weeks of receipt of a manuscript, and the reviewers’ comments are sent to the corresponding author by e-mail. The corresponding author must indicate the alterations that have been made in response to the reviewers’ comments item by item. Failure to resubmit the revised manuscript within 4 weeks of the editorial decision is regarded as a withdrawal. A final decision on acceptance/rejection for publication is forwarded to the corresponding author from the editor.
Reviewers are selected from qualified experts in the relevant fields. Members of the editorial team and individuals without appropriate subject-matter expertise are excluded from serving as reviewers to ensure the integrity and independence of the peer review process.
All manuscripts from editors, employees, or members of the editorial board are processed same to other unsolicited manuscripts. During the review process, submitters will not engage in the decision process. Editors will not handle their own manuscripts although they are commissioned ones.
Experimental research on animals must follow internationally recognized guidelines. A statement to this effect must appear in the manuscript, including the name of the body which gave approval, with a reference number where appropriate. Manuscripts will be rejected if the editorial office considers that the research has not been carried out within an ethical framework, e.g. if the severity of the experimental procedure is not justified by the value of the knowledge gained.
We neither guarantee the acceptance without review nor very short peer review times for unsolicited manuscripts. Commissioned manuscripts also reviewed before publication.
Appeals of decisions
Authors have the right to appeal an editorial decision. Appeals must be submitted in writing to the Editorial Office within 14 days of the decision notification. The appeal letter should contain a detailed justification and point-by-point responses to the reviewers' or editor's comments. The Editor-in-Chief, in consultation with the Editorial Board, will carefully review the appeal and may assign a new independent reviewer if deemed necessary. The subsequent decision by the Editor-in-Chief is final.
Handling of complaints
Complaints regarding the peer review and editorial processes may be submitted in writing to the Editor-in-Chief or the Editorial Board, and the Editorial Board shall review the matter and notify the complainant of the outcome.
3. Data sharing policy
The data and materials supporting the findings of this study should be clearly described in the manuscript. If they are publicly available, the authors must provide the name of the repository and the direct access link or identifier. If they are not publicly available, the authors should specify the conditions under which the data or materials can be made available.
4. Data archiving policy
It is accessible without barrier from Korea Citation Index (https://kci.go.kr) or National Library of Korea (http://nl.go.kr) in the event a journal is no longer published. Full text of JAST has been archived in PubMed Central (PMC; http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/journals/2769/) from the 56th volume, 2014.
5. Preprint policy
A preprint can be defined as a version of a scholarly paper that precedes formal peer review and publication in a peer-reviewed scholarly journal. JAST allows authors to submit preprints to the journal. It is not treated as duplicate submission or duplicate publication. JAST recommends that authors disclose the existence of a preprint with its DOI in the letter to the editor during the submission process. Otherwise, a plagiarism check program may flag the results as containing excessive duplication. A preprint submission will be processed through the same peer review process as a usual submission. If a preprint is accepted for publication, the authors are recommended to update the information on the preprint site with a link to the published article in JAST, including the DOI at JAST. It is strongly recommended that authors cite the article in JAST instead of the preprint in their next submission to journals.
6. Advertising policy
JAST accepts advertisements. Any individuals or organizations who are interested in advertising their products or services in the print copies of the journal or on its website are encouraged to contact the editorial office. The acceptance of advertisement will be discussed by the editorial board and will be ultimately approved by the publisher.
Advertising is separate from content. Advertisers and sponsors have no advance knowledge of our editorial contents, nor do the editors have advance knowledge of advertisers. Content is never altered, added, or deleted to accommodate advertising. Advertisers and sponsors have no input regarding any of our editorial decisions or advertising policies.
Disclaimer: Neither the publisher nor the authors will be legally liable for any of the content of advertisements, so readers must keep this in mind when reading or seeing advertisements.
7. Special Issues or Topics Policy
The Editorial board may decide to publish special issues or topics without a fixed publication schedule. The planning and publication of special issues or topics, as well as the appointments of guest editors, are determined by the Editorial Board. The Editor-in-Chief is responsible for the content of all special issues or topics, which must fall within the scope of FSP.
The Editorial board must verify and approve the credential of guest editors, and the Editor-in-Chief supervises their work. Special issues or topics are subject to the same peer-review process as regular articles, and any exceptions must be transparently disclosed. Any articles submitted by the guest editor to a special issue or topic are subject to an independent review process.
8. Crossmark policy
CrossMark is a multi-publisher initiative to provide a standard way for readers to locate the authoritative version of an article or other published content.
